Lies, damn lies and Fraudulent statistics...

A recent (Alleged) poll of NHS deaf patients in the United Kingdom has been declared 'proof' by the British Deaf association of extensive BSL usage in Great Britain:

The British Deaf Association (BDA) welcomes the latest results from the GP Patient Survey, which confirms that there are just over 100,000 adult Deaf British Sign Language (BSL) users in England. At last a clear question has been included in a national survey which makes the important link between being Deaf and using BSL. This provides confirmation of what the BDA has long believed; that the number of Deaf people who use BSL in England is significantly higher than previous estimates.

This survey, conducted by Ipsos MORI and commissioned by the Department of Health, is the largest of its kind of the population other than the national Census carried out every 10 years.

Total and utter GARABAGE ! No one has asked deaf patients WHAT language or access they use in GP surgeries in the UK, not a single deaf person at my deaf club has been asked about preference or, is mostly able to GET access to GP surgeries, neither are preferences asked for at GP surgeries. These utterly misleading statistics, have been, and I put it bluntly, either been MANUFACTURED my Ipso-Mori polls, or GP's have not understood the survey. Curiously this 100,000 figure is exactly the same as the total amount of deaf people registered as such. I also asked my GP, who said he had not participated in any survey, had he done so, he would have first asked me my preference, and, permission to log that preference with mori, he did neither. If GP's do not KNOW what means we use how can they say we use them ?

Who did they ASK ? it wasn't deaf people. They asked GP's ? who are the health services WORST providers of access in the whole country to those with hearing loss ? the one sector that did another NHS survey confiding that the deaf were a pain in the ass to them and were the most difficult and exasperating patients they have ever dealt with ?

All deaf use sign ? here we go again ......... it is bad form the BDA is agreeing with this survey, if there were THAT many BSL people they would be snowed under with members, instead they are bereft and going broke, no link of course....! For Ipso-Mori read Hans Anderson.... for BDA read desperation.

  1. Next year's census finally has BSL listed down as a language, only then will we a figure close to the number of people with BSL as their first language. And it ain't going to be close to 100k!

  2. It depends HOW the question is put, is BSL your primary and daily means of communication ? or, just one of many you have to use ? omitting of course PREFERENCE, as this is NOT the same as ability and need. There has never been a survey that asked every UK deaf person what communications they USE. SS used to keep records of registered deaf people and how the SS supported them, but that was only deaf registered with them, 16% It's not been possible to get anywhere near 21% response from the deaf community on anything, I think 9% was the most they ever got....hence I believe the mori poll bllx basically.

  3. There are a lot of people who would be signing but for the suppression of sign language.

  4. There is no suppression of LEARNING sign language, there is in the application of it. Sign is an active barrier to employment and many social areas, and it's primary function and maximum efficiency is within the deaf world as a social tool. I don't think this will ever change myself, that's why I supported alternatives and a change in education of the deaf, if it isn't working you have to change and adapt.

I realise this is capitulating to oppression of the dedicated sign user, just being realistic, but sign is not all there is for deaf to use. They have a choice, which mode to go for. If we saw a widespread acceptance of sign, you would still not be able to force employers or workmates to use it, it would be a recipe for angst, and the interpreters simply do not exist for it to happen.

Sign can only work, if hearing adopt it too. The last 10 years I have seen deaf making headway in many areas, but they were mostly damned good lip-readers or had effective aids. Some deaf icons here are Jack Ashley (An CI implantee), Evelyn Glennie (A brilliant lip-reader), Ruth Myers and Co also very good lip-readers and communicators.

We had good signers in Alker, and others but they couldn't move outside the deaf area for long and all retired back to it. They are the most able of the signers, and they couldn't maintain a breakthrough.
