Pots, kettles and the whole damned thing.... Biased, surely not !!! This is a blogger who refuses to accept feedback too...... how about 'hard of listening John ?'
Well, I will never leave a comment over there, for obvious reason. If he was able to be cordial and respectful even though we both are not on the same page, that would be the day. Just does not happen at all, with him.
I want to touch on that term "hard of hearing". It is NOT a politically correct word. Not even a 'political correctness identity'
If John Egbert is as well versed with the deaf cultured community as I am, he would know that, the term has been around for eons, before the term 'political correctness' came on board.
Some of us feel hypocritical when we use the term deaf when in fact we are not deaf, we can hear - if not perfect. Makes sense?
What is interesting is that if John Egbert has issues with 'political correct identity' when why isn't he raising hell about these ridiculous PC signs for country?
I am one who would love to see PC go away. Hard of hearing isn't PC. John Egbert is desperate, is all.
Oh, Hypocritical Blog of the week? nah. Make that YEAR. ;)
Candy, Hard of Hearing is a political correctness term and the Deaf community know who you are and why you have that personality such as anti-AB2072 bill that supports the one-sided medical ideology solutions for people being Deaf.
AB2072 covers ALL options and choices, not just one.
You obviously did not read the bill.
Also, as a result of that VETO, Mendoza and the deaf folks in CA are actually working together to ensure information is disseminated to all parents that include all options and choices which was really not much different than what AB2072 proposed. All in all, one can say: Thanks to AB2072, they now can agree on materials/information used without using the law.
There's good coming out of it and it would not have happened without AB2072!
It does not take a genius to see that. The winners are (we know who they are), let's see if you can figure that one out, JE. ;)
Candy, The bill got revised during the process by the Deaf community which you objected. Mendoza was gullible by the Option (oral) group which you supported. It was the revision of the bill by the Deaf community that got the bill vetoed. Candy, you did not win, we, the Deaf community won. John
BTW, Candy, Sheri Farinha, the leader against the AB2072 which you fought against is recognized as Deaf Person of the year... The Deaf Life magazine selected a Californian community leader who helped leading the fight in California so that the ASL would be equally informed to parents with newly identified Deaf babies as the other "medical and oral methods/approaches" among a list of challenges and victories. Sheri Farinha won, Candy lost.
Please do not put words in my mouth, show me the revision that I objected to. Please do. Because I have never objected to the insertion of "American Sign Language" in the bill. It was there from the start whether it was labeled 'sign language' or 'ASL' as we know that many folks use various signs tend to call it "ASL".
What you do not seem to understand or get is the fact that currently the agreement that Mendoza, Roche, Sheri, Marla, etc came to is NOT much different from what the Bill originally proposed. What this means is they have all agreed to just about the same idea that was originally proposed but without the need to make it a law. I don't know if you have read the latest that came out of CA.
The ironic thing is that the end result of disseminating the basic idea of such information to parents of deaf children is not any different from the beginning - even without the bill.
What this points to is the fact that Sheri and Marla among a few others were able to get to the bottom of things by being smart not to involve a certain person or a certain organization in the recent process where they've managed to collaborate with the oral proponent members in reaching a compromise.
I think Sheri has done a lot for the deaf people in CA that goes beyond AB2072 and if she was chosen to be the Deaf Person of the Year by Deaf Life magazine, kudos to her! I'm happy for her. This is more than I can say for you. ;)
I am nowhere close to being an activist like Sheri or you. I'm just a blogger who is not an activist. Remember this, I am NOT an activist. Sheri deserves the recognition and I'm glad it's her and not you.
As for who won and who lost, you still don't get it. I'm not even part of that equation at all. It's not me who lost nor is it me who won. Think again!
Candy, I think that it is too late to try to get the egg off of your face. Yes, I should to say that you did changed your "face" after the AB2072 bill was vetoed but the Deaf community know your true identity. If you want to show your true face, then advocate bilingualism for all Deaf babies and children in schools and show your respect of American Sign Language. Candy, it is not who I am or who you are, it is the Deaf babies and children in schools that need help which the Deaf education is still dismal for over 100 years. John
What do you not understand? It seems you have a problem with reading things because I asked you to show where I objected to the revision. You still have not pointed to it. It's on you.
Do you not read my blog? Obviously you do not or it's just that you don't understand what you're reading. Let me tell you why I said this. If you really understand where I stand and what I said based on what I blogged about during the whole AB2072 fiasco, you would have seen that after the Senate passed the bill, I made a statement that it did not matter what happened after that. It did not matter if the bill got passed or not in the end. Remember? ah, probably not, you choose to only believe in your delusions. I'm done talking to you, it is one reason why I do not comment on your blog. You just don't bother to read things and you assume things too much. I don't have time for folks like you, sorry John.
It's like how you also assume that I don't respect sign language. lol too funny. Why do you assume things? Can't read well? Or is it something else?
Whatever you say from this point on, I'm not gonna bother. I'm clearly wasting my time with you. Please READ carefully and refrain from being delusional and assuming things. Also, please learn to respect all kinds of deaf people whether they speak/listen/sign/cue or whatever. Respect them all. Thank you and good day.
Wow, it's amazing how the topic turned to AB2072 so fast and the topic was originally about 'hard of hearing' being PC or not. SMH
It's amazing how things are online, because being part of deaf culture growing up, I was never put down for speaking, wearing hearing aid, etc. And, many culturally deaf folks use the word hard of hearing and it was never an issue. The only issue I saw as a child is if the person was not part of deaf culture and was oral and learning sign language, they were called 'hearing on forehead' and it was never used against me because I had deaf parents and was part of deaf culture. And, truth be told, there are many deaf families with members that are HOH. The term hoh was used by many in deaf culture as well and it was never considered a dirty word nor considered PC, the term PC was never used in the 60s. I always saw deaf cultured folks putting down those late signers/former oralist as hypocritical. And, still do, today. The term hard of hearing was around for eons. In the late 60's, in Chicago there were programs started up for 'hard of hearing' kids since it was noted that there are hard of hearing kids that have different needs within mainstream than deaf kids, so we were separated from them and put in different schools. Not sure if there was a criteria to be labeled Hoh. But, I think it had to do with how much one could hear and understand spoken words with hearing aids/lip reading. Either way, I am definitely defiant about my stance on the fact that HOH is NOT a PC word. ;) It's not. JE can either agree to disagree or go to hell.
Candy, Why don't you attend EHDI 2012 St Louis or other important events related to Deaf babies and children? Speak to the public rather than hide behind your Candy name and only do blogs.
But no, I think you rather associate with people like Barry Sewell, Mike McConnell, and others that don't show their face in events or conference related with helping Deaf babies and children.
I dare you to be a visitable leader for the cause....or are you one of the Mask of Benevolence character?
PC is a curse. It is fair to say the various rights campaigners have exploited it as much as anyone else. They have used it to promote and attack discriminations, and even invented and demanded PC terminology themselves, much of which is the cause of dissent within the various loss/deaf areas. I agree to an fair extent the USA has led the way on using the 'right' words to describe things, the UK quickly followed then the extremists moved in and made the whole concept a mockery. Even sign language has altered to accommodate the 'right' way of addressing people and situations. No doubt American lawyers had a hand in it, given the USA court systems thrive on people suing each other. It's one thing to not use derogatory terms, another to pigeon-hole everyone as A,B or C labels are for jars not people. What is the capital 'D' or 'd' that John E endorses but an attempt to divide us all ? Hard of Hearing ? Hearing impaired ? Have not we all endorsed these terms at some time ? It should be about people and individuality, not politics. It seems America has left the UK behind in saying the 'right' thing, in the 'right' place ! I think it unfair of John to label fellow deaf people as discriminatory as hearing are, given his total censorship of any feedback of his own view, I give him air time here ,how about opening up your blog John ? I'm not deaf I'm challenged hearing-wise lol...
