This term still seems to be doing the rounds, even wikipedia the worlds source of the 'lets make up a word and it will become real' seems to have entered it is a viable term used by deaf people.
I've never used it, and I don't know many deaf who do except those online who want to praise deaf culture and need an aunt Sally to regail against, then the term 'Hearies' is used in a pseudo mocking way that borders on derogatory. This term seems to ignore the fact deafened and acquired deaf people were hearing prior to deafness and most Hearing aid users still aspire to be hearing as well.
How do hearing people see it ? probably they feel sorry for culture vultures who feel the need to poke fun at hearing to justify what they do. Deaf people do not NEED identifying via culture, they do everything bar wearing a sandwhich board, I suppose it is to re-enforce who THEY are, rather than identifying hearing people which is totally necessary . Like most deaf terms, audism, deafie and Hearies are a form of 'slang' which can be used as a genuine identification means, or simply to poke fun at. Hell deaf people invented terminological warfare..... I've read deaf lawyers in the UK using the term in a mocking way as well, is that really necessary ? does it give it an good impression to others ? Given hearing people who use terms like 'deafies' get criticised for so doing. It's a 'deaf thing' aka its a 'black thing' ? We can use the terms, they can't ? Do hearing people NEED identifying ? Perhaps the deaf suffer the dilemma of not knowing who is hearing or not ? Don't see that, it is immediately obvious to a deaf person when someone they are conversing with isn't. Deaf just look to see if they sign, if they don't they are hearing.... DOH !
All patience to the hearing population who take this silly term in their stride, and deaf should feel themselves fortunate none take offence when it is used in a derogatory way, since deaf people certainly would not.... DEAF are the minority NOT hearing !
REF Hardly complimentary and used like a scatter gun... The T-shirt does not do us any favours either..
Fair is Fair ?
