Deaf people will have better access to services thanks to an £80,000 cash boost. The Putting You First change fund grant awarded to Dumfries and Galloway Hard of Hearing Group will help people living with hearing loss by appointing full-time co-ordinator Julie Turner. She said: “We want to ensure we can continue offering our essential services. It’s quite a daunting task when you consider there are 25,000 people in the region either deaf or hard of hearing.”
The grant, split over two years, will allow Julie to work with chairman Dennis Arnold providing additional hearing-aid care and maintenance drop-in clinics and potentially extend the group’s services into care homes.
Julie added: “The grant has allowed the group to employ me and I’ve hit the ground running with volunteer recruitment and training. “I’m working to raise awareness of where and when our drop-in clinics take place and what services people can access in them. “I’ve also been tasked with looking into the potential for offering additional drop-in clinics and providing our services to care homes across Dumfries and Galloway.”
