Deaf Employees: A Liability to employers ?

This year's Deaf Jobseeker and Employee Experiences Survey report found that over half of deaf or hard of hearing employees have faced some discrimination during their career with 62 per cent facing this from colleagues and 53 per cent being subjected to discrimination by management.

Deaf and hard of hearing individuals are protected from being subject to unfavourable treatment under the Equality Act 2010. Under equality laws, once an employer knows or should know that their employee has a disability, they are under a duty to make reasonable adjustments to avoid the disadvantage suffered by the employee.

As the survey found that 47 per cent of deaf workers did not receive support and guidance from their employer it is apparent that many employers are failing in this provision.
