Police to Launch Deaf-Interactive web chat site.

Image result for west yorkshire police logoWest Yorkshire Police are hosting the first web chat dedicated to supporting the deaf community today Weds 5 Oct. 

Previous webchats have offered advice and support around issues such as cyber crime to people who are deaf or hard of hearing, however this webchat is dedicated to the deaf community, encouraging people to log on and find out about existing services they can access, ask questions and make suggestions for future improvements. 

The webchat will take place on Wednesday 5 October, between 6 and 7pm and will give people the opportunity to chat with Chloe Lockley, a deaf member of staff and one of the Force's Deaf Champions; and Head of Customer Contact Centre, Tom Donohoe, as well as the Force Lead for Deaf Community Engagement Simon Phillips.  

Organised in conjunction with West Yorkshire Police’s Customer Contact Centre who manage all emergency and non-emergency calls in to the Force, the webchat invites Deaf people to get in contact to find out how accessible the Force’s contact options are, and how easy it is to contact West Yorkshire Police. Tom Donohoe, Head of the Customer Contact Centre, will also be available to provide advice and reassurance. 

He said; "We have worked hard over the last few years to update and improve the services we offer to the Deaf community so that everyone can access our services. For non emergencies, we have a 101 Live Chat facility on the website, which means people can speak to a member of the Customer Contact Team directly for assistance regarding their non-emergency enquiry. We can also chat to people over text or typetalk, so there are lots of ways people can get in touch." 

Simon Phillips said; "The webchat follows our two successful events to mark International Week of the Deaf which took place from 19th to 25th September. We were really pleased by how many members of the community attended our two events in Huddersfield and Leeds. At both events, people were impressed by all the different areas of work taking place to help the Deaf community.  

"Contacting West Yorkshire Police was raised by members of the Deaf community at both events, so we’re really pleased to offer people the opportunity to ask us any questions about how they can contact us. The webchat will also allow people to ask us any questions about the work of West Yorkshire Police in keeping communities safe and feel safe, as well as share any experiences with us. You don’t have to provide your name when you ask us a question."
